It is well known to us that doing a bit of exercise reduces tension and anxiety a bit. But how come these two are related. What is the process by which level of mental health is elevated? Is there any scientific relation between these two? Let us discus about the matter.

There is a vast support regarding an affirmative and permanent relationship in between doing regular work out and different indices of psychological well being. Various documentations are available in this field. The evidence for promotion of mental health, though much more obvious in the psychologically challenged individuals, is further strong in the Psychiatric populations.

As for examples, a couple of studies have established a positive association between mental health and work out in the group of people having alcohol abuse problems, those are suffering from evident depression and people having Schizophrenia.

The Endorphin (a hormone that is secreted by the brain, which initiates counteractive measures against stress), hypothesis tells us that the positive effects of exercise on mental well being, particularly ‘Euphoria’ is manifested by the secretion and binding of bodily opioids in the brain. This in turn increases the pain threshold level and the stress is reduced.

Exercise does not change the functioning of Blood Brain Barrier (BBB), which permits the peripheral endorphin to react straightforwardly over the barrier. Alternatively, we can say that the increase in the level of Endorphin following exercise is measured in the peripheral blood and not directly in the cerebral circulation. Because of the fact that BBB blocks the passage of the flow study, it was not studied by which method opioids can act in the brain tissues. Still Endorphin hypothesis is the mostly acceptable theory as on date.

At present the main focus of the different studies are to measure the effect of different hormones which are secreted during stress like serotonin, noradrenalin and dopamine. It is being studied that whether exercise can check the secretion of these hormones or not or how they modify the level of mental health.
